One Care of Southwest Virginia, Inc.FAQsWhat is One Care of Southwest Virginia? One Care is a not-for-profit organization led by a 12-member volunteer Board of Directors and supported by a growing number of local and regional partners. One Care is working to implement a new system that will make it easier for the 154,000 citizens of Southwest Virginia who have no insurance or who are underinsured to get the services they need. What services does One Care provide? One Care does not provide services directly. Using COSMOS, One Care is attempting to integrate providers of human and health services throughout Virginia’s 9th Congressional District via a web-based referral system. What is COSMOS? COSMOS is an electronic, web-based referral system developed by Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg Electronic Village in collaboration with the Washington County Department of Social Services and People, Inc. COSMOS is intended eliminate the need to fill out numerous applications that often represent a barrier to or delay in getting services to the consumer. One Care’s goal is to make access points to the COSMOS system available to human and health service agencies throughout the 9th Congressional District. Who is involved in this effort? One Care includes representation from our region’s universities, health care providers, human service organizations, Departments of Social Services, the Virginia Department of Health, local governments. Our goal is to provide a linkage between all agencies, public and private, that offer both health care and human services, such as housing assistance, job training, and counseling. Who is going to profit? One Care focuses on the needs of the patient and not any single provider or program. Because One Care is a not-for-profit organization, any funds it raises are spent to spread the benefits of the COSMOS linkages to communities in Southwest Virginia. It is our fervent hope that the communities themselves and the citizens of the 9th Congressional District will be the ones to profit from One Care’s efforts.
